ABOUT NID –
The Government of India with the assistance of the Ford Foundation and the Sarabhai family established the National Institute of Industrial Design, as it was originally called as an autonomous all-India body in September 1961 at Ahmedabad. Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira were played a major role in the establishment and early years of NID.
National Institute of Design is internationally acclaimed as one of the finest educational and research institutions for Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design. It is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. NID has been declared ‘Institution of National Importance’ by the Act of Parliament, by virtue of the National Institute of Design Act 2014.
NID consists of design Specialisations like –
B.Design –
- Communication Design - Communication design is a discipline that combines storytelling, visual strategy, and production methods. This discipline aids in learning the aesthetic, technical, and conceptual techniques from three major fields- Graphics, Animation, and Film. The discipline equips students with design thinking, research, and ideation skills which broaden their prospects for various design entrepreneurship, industry, crafts sector, and various design sectors.
- Textile and Apparel Design - This is a discipline that combines textiles, fashion, technique, technology, and an empowered creative process. Fundamentals of design, specific textile and apparel methods, textile fibres, weave structures, surface design, dyeing techniques, and coloration, printing methods, pattern making, draping and sewing techniques, and constructed textiles. On the technical end, they learn pattern extraction, 3D surface work, technical sketching, and application. On the broader front, they learn inputs related to art appreciation, design research, design process, design management, sustainable textile, and apparel design methods.
- Ceramic and Glass design - Ceramic and Glass Design discipline at NID imparts multiple design approaches through extensive engagement with materials, people, technologies and work cultures. The discipline provides opportunities to learn from the craft traditions of the country and global art practices. The discipline offers tremendous expressive and creative possibilities in the realm of craft, architectural spaces, healthcare, hospitality, home décor, hi-tech products and lifestyle product categories.
- Furniture and Interior design - The B.Des (undergraduate) program emphasises on development of strong material, technical, aesthetic and empirical skills crucial for delivering experiences and stories of human participation with objects and environment. The program helps building conceptualisation and development skills through detailed material study, hand-digital drawings and physical modelling.
- Product Design - In this discipline students learn to apply basic principles of design, knowledge of ergonomics, materials and manufacturing techniques as well as their own aesthetic sensibilities. The discipline traverses across a diverse set of concerns and needs and aims to enable students to understand and respond sensitively to a wide variety of user-groups with different physical, economical and emotional needs.
- Film and Video Communication Design - The discipline focuses on building a strong foundation in visual communication skills, social studies and theoretical as well as technical aspects of film-making. Films made by students have won global appreciation with numerous awards in competitive film festivals in India and abroad. Graduates have built rewarding careers in advertising, film production, television, feature films, interactive media and ventures with government bodies and NGOs with specific developmental and communication agenda.
- Exhibition Design - The discipline considers exhibition from the perspectives of communication, design and fabrication by developing skills in spatial planning, image-making, narrative-building, lighting design, interactive media technology and scenography. In addition, it relies on a working knowledge of structures, typography, visual design fundamentals, combined with an understanding of human factors. In short, it harnesses physical space and visual storytelling to create environments that communicate.
- Animation Film Design - The Animation Film Design discipline at NID seeks to hone and mentor the visual storytelling skills of young students through the medium of moving images. Students are encouraged to tap into the rich tradition of storytelling, art forms, music and sounds from the Indian subcontinent. With a strong emphasis on traditional drawing and animation skills coupled with the latest digital animation techniques, the discipline aims to educate students to create original short animation films and graphic novels.
While most graduates from the Animation Film Design discipline have been successfully employed in production houses, TV channels, independent animation studios, digital gaming studios and UI/UX and e-learning companies, some have chosen to run their own successful studios and are significant stakeholders and contributors to the Indian Animation Industry.
M.Design –

The areas covered include typography and type design, publication design, image-making, illustration, photography, packaging, print design, corporate identity, branding, information & communication systems in digital domains as well as analogous media.
The aim is to stimulate the development of independent critical judgment, sound research skills, the ability to think creatively and practice design as professionals. Graduates of the programme find placements with leading graphic design firms or start their own design enterprise if they desire.
- Animation Design – The Animation Film Design discipline at NID seeks to hone and mentor the visual storytelling skills of young students through the medium of moving images. - Photography - The discipline emphasises on the contextual and research-based understanding of the subject matter and a balance of rational and intuitive processes. It further aspires to unravel, articulate and consolidate historic and contemporary visual trajectories inherent to the Indian subcontinent. It also offers students opportunities to engage with its several international partners in Europe, America and Southeast Asia. Employment opportunities for graduates range from freelance and employed photographers, photo editors and media professionals to critics, writers, curators, academics and researchers.
- Industrial Design – It consists of 6 disciplines -

- Toy and Game Design - The Toy and Game Design discipline at NID aims to work with the idea of ‘play’ and develop a ‘play-centric’ approach to address the growing needs, issues and opportunities for innovation in the field of education, entertainment and human development.
The discipline promotes a project-based pedagogy that encourages students to work on projects of their choice. These projects range from digital and board games, toys, play-spaces, educational play material and interactive experiences to sports equipment and design for current and future scenarios and integrate creative ideas with practical know-how in order to ensure innovative and meaningful outcomes.
- Transportation and automobile design - With due emphasis on environmental, socio-economic, cultural and aesthetic aspects of personal/mass transportation, the programme offers opportunities for learners to look at ‘mobility’ from product, experience, system and service perspectives and create innovative solutions.
While most graduates of the discipline have been successfully employed by the transportation/automobile industry in India, as well as some of the leading design studios abroad, some have transformed into successful entrepreneurs.
- Universal Design - Universal Design discipline at NID, addresses design for a sustainable future, where products and systems respond to the challenges of a large and complex set of users with diverse abilities, needs, aspirations and notions of well-being. The programme aims at preparing students to be design professionals with competence in system-level design development of products and services which are adaptive to the needs of a variety of users – across a wide range of cultural and social factors as well as trans-generational, physical and cognitive abilities.
- Interdisciplinary design- It has 2 disciplines
- Design for Retail Experience - the advent of technology and online retail has drastically changed people’s mind-set towards shopping. The ability to shop ‘anywhere, anytime’ has created new challenges for retail design. Students are encouraged to study various formats of retail, spanning e-commerce start-ups to multinational ‘brick and mortar’ stores. Students are exposed to the latest global technology and new-age interactive design to make them proficient in the retail design sector.
- Strategic of design management - Strategic design refers to the professional field in which designers use their principles, tools and methods to influence strategic decisions that have a long-term impact on organisations, communities and the eco-system at large. The discipline seeks to innovatively apply creative, integrative, systemic, synergetic and human-centric approaches to business, organizational and management processes to make them more efficient and effective.
- IT Integrated – It consists 4 disciplines :
- Digital Game Design - The programme focuses on developing skills in the areas of digital media, digital arts, history and theory of games/gaming, 2D and 3D graphics, simulation and modelling, storytelling and narrative architecture.
Students get inputs from professional game designers, artists and other professionals for exposure in current best practices in the domain, including on-line, educational, strategy and internet-based multi-player games. Students explore how game design studios operate and explore business models prevalent in the gaming industry along with the contribution of independent developers/designers towards the industry. It further provides inputs in the areas of digital rendering, writing, music and sound production and user-interface design.
- Interaction Design -It caters to domains related to innovation and developments in technology like AI, machine learning, IoT, etc. and prepares students to develop concepts, practices and processes in the area of interaction design. Students gain the competence to design a wide range of products for a diverse audience using digital media/technologies. They develop the ability to conceptualize and prototype products following a design process that progresses from the research phase to design development in the form of simulations and prototypes.
- Information Design - The core belief of the programme is to assist humanity to make sense of the facts and data by designing them into a consumable information, thereby enriching the user experience and knowledge. It synchronizes fields of visual design, design research, data science, processing and imaging technology with an objective to train specialist designers who can convert complex information into a user friendly and visually rich resource, which enables insights and decision-making.
- New Media Design - The New Media Design discipline deals with the design of technology, where students conceptualize, create and critique current, emerging and speculative technologies. Work that emerges from the discipline aims to be embedded in context and to address the theoretical, historical and philosophical concerns of its time. the discipline enables students to navigate various disciplines to create associations across fields, including art, science, technology, design and philosophy. As a result, graduates of the discipline are able to function in situations where ambiguity persists and to inform their own practice through continued research.
- Textile Design - The curriculum emphasizes on building a variety of skills through increasingly complex design projects related to the apparel, furnishing and allied industries, with inputs in social sciences, craft economics, trends, brand identity, technology and computer-aided design. The programme includes several interdisciplinary projects for enhancing livelihoods/public spaces/exhibition/interiors and for the automobile industry. Most graduates of the discipline find successful employment with the textile manufacturing industry or start their own companies, while others join social-developmental projects, pursue higher studies or seek careers in academics.
- Apparel Design - The Apparel Design discipline emphasises on process-centric learning and addresses current and emerging concerns for functionality, environment; socio-economic development through exploration of materials, techniques and technology. The programme aims at educating individuals to be creative and responsible designers, competent to handle multiple aspects of today’s highly competitive and diverse apparel Industry. A broad knowledge base is created through subjects like ‘History of Costume and Fashion Design’, ‘Science and Liberal Arts’ and ‘Design Management’. Skills and conceptual abilities are developed through project-based learning where students are encouraged to pursue their creative abilities.
Graduates seek work in various sectors of the apparel industry as entrepreneurs, freelance designers and other roles.
- Lifestyle accessory design - The Lifestyle Accessory Design discipline trains students to create lifestyle accessories and systems using different materials, processes and techniques. Students get an opportunity to work in a wide spectrum of domains such as personal accessories, luggage, footwear, lighting, furniture and interior objects. They also explore colours, materials and trims for white goods and automobile interiors.
Minimum, average and highest salary package offered in NID-
In India if we talk about placements in Design Industry then NID is on peak. As if we consider Bachelors salary package then Minimum salary its Rupees 12 lakh per annum, average package is 38 lakh per annum (MNC - Toshiba Japan) which was bagged by a student of product design Toshiba Japan and as the highest it was 50 lakh rupees per annum as per recent records till 2024.
If we talk about masters then highest package till now date is 72 lakh per annum as the average package offered to NID graduates in 2024 is estimated to be around ?30 lakhs per annum by the top recruiters such as Adobe, Microsoft, Amazon, Infosys, TCS, Mahindra & Mahindra, Wipro, HCL, and Deloitte etc.
